A half of the Parliament's members should be elected based on party lists and the other half based on uninominal constituencies, suggests Alexandru Oleinic, coordinating co-president of the People's Party.
“This will ensure full representativeness of the regions in the central legislative body”, he said in an interview with a TV channel, adding that this mixed system will transform Moldova into “a classic European parliamentary republic”.
“This will offer us the opportunity to identify the most worthy people from across the country, with all their energy and expertise, their contacts and experience, and create a Parliament that represents all districts. This is the only way for the voters to actually influence political processes in our country”, stated Alexandru Oleinic.
The proposal was discussed at the Second Congres of the People's Party last week. The Congress elected the new leaders of the party. Former Communications Minister Alexandru Oleinic was elected as coordinating co-president. Ex-Agriculture Minister Valeriu Cosarciuc and regional leaders Angela Cebotari and Vasile Gutu were elected as co-presidents. The party's founding group also included representatives from the youth wing of the extinct Moldova Noastra Alliance party.
“The Moldova Noastra Alliance was the only party that made active opposition to the Communists and today we have every right to ask, why hasn't the government been able to resolve the questions posed by society? It's obvious that the country already needs a political alternative” said Alexandru Oleinic.
At its Congress, the People's Party presented an ample program of economic and social reforms, including an agricultural reform. In particular, the party seeks to reduce VAT in agriculture, introduce a flat land tax and exempt small enterprises that create jobs from paying VAT for a period of three years.
