The People’s Ombudsman Mihail Cotorobai condemns any attempt to intimidate the press or to exert pressure on journalists, implicitly with the aim of influencing the public opinion. The ombudsman calls on the political players in Moldova to be correct and show respect for the press and not to allow attempts to influence the editorial decisions of media outlets that should be free from economic and political pressure or personal interests, IPN reports, with reference to a statement issued by the ombudsman.

Mihail Cotorobai reaffirms that freedom and independence of the press are an essential condition in a democratic society and that the press should be free and independent from the state and form political influences so as to ensure the realization of the citizens’ fundamental right to information.

The ombudsman calls on the journalists to be correct, objective and honest when fulfilling their duties, to resist any influence, not to accept to misinform and to manipulate the public opinion by distorted information and to do their job in accordance with the professional standards.
