Political analyst Igor Botan considers that the Moldovan people is unified in its aspiration to have decent living conditions and, if the politicians manage to ensure such conditions, society will be united. He referred to politicians’ statements that the Moldovans should be more united in situations when embargos are faced.

Igor Botan took part in the public debate “Post-scriptum: What should Moldovan society know and do over the ‘bothering’ statements about the Republic of Moldova made by foreign officials?” that was staged by IPN News Agency, where he said that the politicians are right when they say that such cases as the Russian embargo represent a shock for the country.

The analyst said that in 2005 Russia adopted three resolutions aimed against Moldova with a view to influencing the results of the parliamentary elections held that year. Three consecutive embargos were imposed after the elections. “We already got used. It is something more or less normal from political viewpoint. They beat the saddle to make the horse understand,” he stated.

As to the national unity, it is a nice, but unachievable objective, said Igor Botan. “I don’t see unity in any political party. If we cannot ensure unity in a party, can we do it in a country that is so fragmented?” asked the analyst.

In the debate, Minister of Agriculture Vasile Bumacov said that there are Moldovan politicians who go to Moscow to convince the Russians to impose different embargoes on Moldova so that they can influence the election outcome. “You should tell those who go to Moscow that they will be able to do nothing only with lab tests and backstairs influence. They make use of the indulgent attitude. They should not have pretexts,” Igor Botan said, addressing the minister.

The public debate “Post-scriptum: What should Moldovan society know and do over the ‘bothering’ statements about the Republic of Moldova made by foreign officials?” is the 21st of the series “Development of political culture by public debates”. The project is supported by the German foundation Hanns Seidel.
