The 250 people who are on probation or parole in Floresti district will be able to use the services of the first rehabilitation center of the country. These persons who benefit both from counseling programs to easier integrate into society and from professional training courses to learn a number of jobs. The center was opened on October 2, IPN reports.

In the opening ceremony, Vladimir Popa, head of the Central Probation Office of Moldova, said some of the people encounter difficulties in reintegrating into society. Therefore, it was decided to create such a center. The rehabilitation center in Floresti was set up within a pilot-program. After its results are analyzed, more such centers could be opened in southern and central Moldova.

Vladimir Popa told the journalists that the beneficiaries of this center will have either common program together with the others or an individual program, depending on the decision of the court of law. The court will also decide if the person will be obliged to attend this center. Those who will not be obliged can ask by themselves to benefit from counseling or professional training. The beneficiaries will learn such occupations as computer repairman, potter and carpenter. They will repair computers and broken furniture and will make different things that will be sold. This way they will earn some money until they get a job.

Deputy Minister of Education Sabina Cerbu said they decided to set up such a center based on the practice of other states. For example, in Romania there are rehabilitation workshops that provide workplaces for such people. In Switzerland, about 1,600 convicts serve their sentences annually in such a workshop. They recycle waste and make works of art or different useful things such as bags and envelopes.

According to official data, there were almost 11,000 people on probation in Moldova this August. At the probation office in Floresti, there are registered 210 people, eight of whom are minors.

The rehabilitation center for people on probation or parole was set up as part of the justice sector reform strategy that is implemented with EU funds.
