The events of August 27, 1989, when the Great National Assembly took place, changed the course of history in Moldova. That assembly was an inestimable victory of the patriotic forces. After 25 years, Moldova has chances to become a prosperous country only if it follows the European course, said people of culture who came together at the head office of the Writers Union to remember those events, IPN reports.

The president of the Writers Union Arcadie Suceveanu said the protagonists of those events are titans who created the Republic of Moldova. “Owing to their struggle and efforts, we were able to regain our rights to past, history, language, anthem and tricolor. These are unforgettable, moving events,” he stated.

Writer Vladimir Besleaga noted that August 27, 1989 was a miracle for Moldova. Thousands of people came together to seek justice. “It was an explosion of the great enthusiasm that gradually developed and was expressed at the Great National Assembly,” he said, adding that the writers were then the first who broke the silence and today they should again assume that role and be more active as the fate of Moldova will be decided in this autumn’s legislative elections.

Actress Ninela Caranfil stated that she lived those events with fear, but believed in justice. “The road was and is hard. There was a lot of pain, betrayal, suffering and deception because those whom we elected didn’t satisfy our wishes,” she said. According to her, the road will be spiny for Moldova, but the people must unite in order to achieve democracy and freedom.

Attending the event, the leader of the PLDM Vlad Filat said the first step towards the European integration of Moldova was taken on August 27, 1989. “Those events showed that great things in history are done by national solidarity, by common efforts and great courage. There is a direct connection between the major events that mark the history of a people. The Great National Assembly decisively determined the voting of the linguistic legislation four days later, on August 31, when the special status of the Romanian language and the return to the Latin script were endorsed,” he stated.

The Great National Assembly of August 27, 1989 was held in the Victory Square in Chisinau (currently the Great National Assembly Square) in the context of the National Renaissance Movement of the end of the 1980s in the Moldovan Soviet Socialist Republic. The event involved about 750,000 people who demanded proclaiming Romanian the official language and passing to the Latin script.
