Taxpayers who didn’t fulfill their fiscal obligations to the state budget are liable to penalties of 0.02% of the declared sum, for every overdue day. Veronica Vragalev, head of the Direct Taxes Administration Division of the State Main Tax Inspectorate, has told IPN that the penalties rise until the debt is settled.

Those who submitted the tax returns on time, but didn’t manage to pay the debts until March 31, must go to the local offices of the State Tax Service to have the payments recalculated, together with the penalties. Banca de Economii (Savings Bank) does not calculate these penalties and they continue to increase if they are not paid.

The taxpayers who submitted the income statement with irregularities or with delay face fines of 200 lei. If the statement is not presented, the fine is 1,000 lei.

Starting with this year, tax returns can be filed to any local office of the State Tax Service. But the debts for the previous years and the penalties can be calculated only at the office located near the place of residence of the taxpayer.

A new electronic service called Checking Account was launched recently. It enables the taxpayers having a digital signature to check all their fiscal obligations. Veronica Vragalev said this service spares the taxpayers from the need to go to the local office of the State Tax Service.
