About 3,500 pedestrians were penalized last year by patrolling inspectors for ignoring the traffic signs, jaywalking or crossing the street at the red color of the stoplights, causing thus accident situations. The fines imposed in such cases vary from 100 to 400 lei.

Press officer of the National Patrolling Inspectorate Uliana Catan has told IPN that 884 or 34.5% of the road accidents recorded last year involved pedestrians. They resulted in 96 deaths. Twenty of the children involved in the 411 traffic accidents lost their lives.

In 77.8% of the cases, the pedestrians were hurt through the drivers’ fault. The other accidents occurred because of the pedestrians’ fault. 56% of the road accidents involving pedestrians happened in the municipality of Chisinau.

An analysis of the traffic rule violations by pedestrians showed that in most of the cases the pedestrians crossed the street without making sure that it is safe, jaywalked or sprung out from behind vehicles.

According to the National Patrolling Inspectorate, the 2,564 road accidents that happened in 2014 resulted in 324 deaths and over 3,000 persons injured.
