The Social Democracy Party (PDS) could support a single opposition candidate in the elections for the Chisinau Municipality mayor. This will happen if it finds common language with other parties, PDS leader, Dumitru Braghis, told a press conference on Monday, February 19.
According to Braghis, an important condition would be that the opposition should be represented by a single candidate and not several of them, even though one of them would be supported by several parties.
At the same time, PDS leader mentioned that the party analyses several variants of the events concerning the elections in Chisinau. The first one relates to the promotion of their own candidate, although it hasn’t been established yet who could be this candidate. He added that it is possible that he himself would be the candidate. The second possibility is that of supporting a common candidate. In this sense, Braghis stated that PDS invited others to examine the possibility of promoting a single candidate, but no concrete response has been received yet. The fact that several candidates have already been proposed by the parties indicates that this idea is not shared by the respective parties.
On the other hand, the leader of the Social Liberal Party (PSL), Oleg Serebrian doubts the probability of promoting a single opposition candidate. “We still believe that a single candidate should be promoted by “liberal parties”, Serebrian told a news conference on Monday, February 19. He considers that it would be an incorrect gesture of the opposition if each party would field its own candidate.
Till present, the Liberal Party announced that it would field the deputy chairman of the party Dorin Chirtoaca for the mayor office. The Democrat Party stated it would promote the deputy chair of the party’s parliamentary faction – Vladimir Filat. The leader of “Moldova Noastra” Alliance, Serafim Urecheanu stated earlier that he admitted the idea of his participation for the same office. However, Urecheanu told a press conference that AMN has several respectable candidates which could run for this office and could lead the municipality. At the moment, AMN is at the stage of negotiations and selection of the candidature.
According to some unconfirmed information, Communists Party could promote for this office the incumbent interim mayor Veaceslav Iordan.
Most probably, general local elections in Moldova will be held in early June.
