The Democratic Party of Moldova (PDM) will not contend in the November 1 presidential elections. The party said there are only two candidates with chances of winning this race and the PDM will decide which of the candidates it will support as a result of consultations with people, the party’s president Pavel Filip stated after the meeting of the PDM’s National Political Council held in the evening of September 9, IPN reports.

“We are not afraid to say it clearly and trenchantly what everyone knows. There are only two candidates in these elections. The rest of the candidates are only “background noise”. The other candidates realize these, but owing to vainglory and narrow interests, they announced their participation in elections. Besides the two candidates with chances, all the others are just pawns and play the role of mixing things up because they reached such agreements or they play each other’s game and, why not, pave the way for talks behind the scenes before the elections,” Pavel Filip told a news conference.

According to him, the PDM will not take part in this show and games, deceiving its voters. “We see no reason in entering this political war and wasting our forces for the office of President that is anyway an honorific, symbolic post as we are a parliamentary republic. The Government and Parliament matter in our country. The President will be unable to raise the salaries and pensions, to create jobs, to attract investments and revitalize the country’s economy. This was done and is done by the Government. The President is responsible for awards and can indicate the foreign policy direction.”

Pavel Filip said the people in the presidential elections will choose this direction by electing one of the two candidates with bigger chances. In the immediate period, representatives of the PDM will travel to all the country’s districts. “The people will help us to take a decision. We will invite members of the Democratic Party to take an active part in the electoral process so as to support a candidate or another. Moreover, a final decision as to the candidate who will be supported by the Democratic Party will be taken following consultations with people.”

The politician also said that the PDM has professionals who can serve on the Government and this was proven by the Cabinet that he managed.
