The Democratic Party (PDM) said it is categorically against annulling the Association Agreement between Moldova and the EU, which is a possibility stated by President Igor Dodon while in Moscow on a visit. In a press release, the PDM says it is for the further rapprochement with the European Union and the relationship between Moldova and the EU should remain the main axis of Moldova’s foreign policy, IPN reports.
At the same time, the PDM considers the bilateral relations between Moldova and Russia are very important for the Republic of Moldova. “That’s why the PDM wants the partners in the Russian Federation to be correctly informed about our country’s European commitment, about our ties that we want to develop with the European Union. Therefore, the Republic of Moldova must be fully ready to strengthen its relations with the Russian Federation so as to increase trade and expand cooperation in the economic, social, cultural, scientific, technological and security areas,” it is said in the press release.
As regards the statements made by the President of Moldova in Moscow, the PDM says nobody should state their personal foreign policy views within official visits abroad. Moldova’s foreign policy is agreed in Chisinau and is applied abroad uniformly.
“In the same connection, we consider President Igor Dodon’s initiative to sign a memorandum with the Eurasian Union lacks legal power as there are no real mechanisms for implementing such a foreign policy project and there is no social or political support for this in the Republic of Moldova. This initiative by President Igor Dodon will remain a poetical intention, while the PDM will use all the available tools to reject such an approach that is not favorable for Moldova’s interests,” says the press release.
The PDM requests Parliament to discuss the positions expressed by President Igor Dodon during his official visit to Moscow on January 17 and to adopt a statement to reassert Moldova’s commitment to continue on the path of European integration.
