The Democratic Party of Moldova (PDM) says it was surprised to find out about the ‘attack improvised by several mayors’ who insinuate that the money to local mayor’s offices is distributed according to political criteria. The party reacted after the joint candidate for President of the center-right Maia Sandu, supported by a number of mayors, said a number of irregularities are witnessed in the current election campaign, with the use by the PDM of the administrative resources and intimidation of voters and mayors by it being the most serious ones, IPN reports.

In a press release, the PDM says that even if someone is tempted to believe that they have to suffer because of their electoral preferences, the procedures for obtaining financing last for months or even years, while Maia Sandu only recently was confirmed as a candidate for President. “Anyone in the Republic of Moldova knows that the country was left without external financing. Therefore, most of the villages and towns remained without the expected development funds. The Filip Government did everything possible to obtain a new agreement with the IMF, which will unblock financing, including on the part of the European Union and the World Bank. The local mayor’s offices also wait for this,” said the party.

According to the PDM, Maia Sandu is probably supported by those mayors who do not really follow or cannot understand these things. “Given that we are in a year marked by financial austerity, we approve of the fact that over 400 mayors of the Republic of Moldova support the PDM’s candidate for President Marian Lupu. We are sure that the support is based on the pro-European platform of our candidate, on the confidence in his experience and on the fact that he will bring European funds for developing Moldovan communities,” reads the press release.

In another development, the PDM says it established that the attack staged by the supporters of Maia Sandu is synchronized on this theme with the Socialists’ candidate Igor Dodon whom the Democrats consider the main danger to the country’s European course. The PDM said these negative campaigns are disqualifying for candidates and it is important for the pro-European voters to penalize them by vote on October 30.
