The Democratic Party dismissed President Nicolae Timofti’s request to confirm the validity of the signatures put by the 56 MPs in support of the candidate for premiership fielded by the recently formed parliamentary majority. The party reiterates its readiness to take part in possible parliamentary elections. The PDM stated its position in a press release, quoted by IPN.
“An official document has stayed on President Nicolae Timofti’s table since January 11, by which it is confirmed the constitution of an absolute parliamentary majority that pledges to support the candidate proposed by the Democratic Party for the post of Prime Minister. This document is viable. It cannot be rewritten at the wish of political and economic interest groups that aim to destabilize the situation in the country, or at the insistence of the parties that promote early elections, not at least at the wish of the head of state,” says the press release.
The PDM specifies that afterward, starting with January 11, 2016, the absolute parliamentary majority fulfilled absolutely all the necessary procedural requirements. “We informed the President about the unanimous decision of the 56 MPs to field a candidate for Prime Minister on behalf of the PDM. All the documents were formalized in strict compliance with the Constitutional Court’s decision No.32 of December 29, 2015. The last statement confirming the position of the parliamentary majority was registered with the President’s chancellery today, 14.01.2016. At this moment, there is no legal reason to review the decision taken by the majority, which was signed and confirmed by the documents submitted to the head of state,” it is said in the press release.
The party makes a new call to President Nicolae Timofti to obey the Constitution and the procedures and to take decisions based on official documents. “The declaration on the constitution of a parliamentary majority, which was signed by 56 MPs, is such an official document. The statements made in public by some of the MPs, to which the presidential press service makes reference, remain only statements made in public. The institutional decisions can be taken only based on the provisions of the Constitution and the case law of the Constitutional Court, not on unfounded assertions made in public.
“In conclusion, if President Nicolae Timofti does not honor his obligations in accordance with the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova, the Democratic Party will ascertain that the early elections were intentionally caused by the head of state, at the wish and insistence of political and economic interest groups, fulfilling the relevant demands of parties. This will lead to an institutional stalemate that risks turning into a profound political crisis. As we declared earlier, the Democratic Party is ready to take part in early elections, knowing that it made everything possible to avoid the destabilization of the situation,” reads the press release issued in the evening of January 14.
