The Communist Party (PCRM) will not denounce the Association Agreement with the European Union, but will insist on reviewing a number of articles of this document, which run counter to the national interests, the party’s leader Vladimir Voronin said in the program “Pahomi” on Realitatea TV channel, IPN reports.
According to Voronin, they will discuss the necessity of returning to some articles with the European partners. It’s not normal that 200 articles of this document are political in character. “The rest will do. We have pleaded for the modernization of the country since 2002. This can be done only by meeting the European standards and we worked out a number of strategies in this respect,” said the leader of the PCRM.
However, Vladimir Voronin considers that the Association Agreement was signed too early. “They didn’t prepare the country for the implementation of this accord. Also, the relations with Russia were destroyed. We now have hundreds of tonnes of apples that got frozen at minus 15 degrees Celsius. Moldova is not ready to join the European Union. It won’t be ready in 10 years either. Maybe it will be ready in 25 years. I do not oppose the integration into the EU, but the country must be prepared, modernized,” he stated.
The Communists’ leader thinks that Moscow’s harsh reaction to the signing and ratification of the Association Agreement with the EU by Moldova is normal. “The Russians had confidence in us, but now do not trust the Moldovan authorities. I would do the same in Putin’s place. We informed the Russian side that we want to modernize the country according to the European standards and will orient to the EU. They had nothing against. Our authorities should have discussed the intentions of associating with the EU with the partners from Moscow and problems wouldn’t have appeared,” said Voronin.
The leader of the PCRM insisted on the necessity of holding a referendum on the integration into the EU. “We will demand that article 2 of the Constitution should be obeyed. The people must decide what direction we should follow. After the referendum, the misunderstandings in society will disappear,” stated Vladimir Voronin.
