The Communists Party (PCRM) will vote in favor of modifying the Constitution according to its amendment proposal formulated earlier, but only after the early legislative elections, the Communist leader Vladimir Voronin told a news conference on Monday, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The former President of Moldova said the PCRM does not celebrate the failure of the September 5 constitutional referendum, but is satisfied with the high political conscience in Moldova and with the fact that the people realized what responsibility towards the country is.
According to Vladimir Voronin, the monitors of the PCRM identified many violations during the referendum, but they will not inform the Central Election Commission (CEC)) about them because the plebiscite is not valid. However, the party's staff will thoroughly examine these irregularities.
Vladimir Voronin accused the Alliance for European Integration of using administrative resources in the referendum. 61% of those who took part in the plebiscite were public servants, he said.
The Communist leader stressed that Acting President Mihai Ghimpu has been usurping the power since June 16 and is liable to up to 25 years in jail. “It is clear that he will provide a certificate about his state of health so as not to be imprisoned,” he said.
As to the Democrat leader Marian Lupu, Vladimir Voronin said he feels sorry for this two-meter high lad who has the status of permanent candidate for the presidency.
In the September 5 referendum, voters were asked whether they are in favor of against amending the Constitution so that it allows for direct election of the head of state. According to the preliminary information provided by the CEC, the voter turnout was 29.05%. For the referendum outcome to be validated, the turnout must be 33.3% of the voters.
