The Party of Communists of the Republic of Moldova (PCRM) describes the participation in the presidential elections in Moldova as support to constitutional overthrow. According to the Communists, the elected President will be illegitimate. Members of the party, led by the Communist leader Vladimir Voronin, told a news conference that those who want to run in the elections do not even keep their word. Several months ago, they sought early parliamentary elections and the Government’s dismissal, but now play the game of those who are in power, IPN reports.

The PCRM considers the March 4 judgment by which the Constitutional Court restored the people’s right to choose the President themselves is unconstitutional. “One of the most serious crimes was committed by this decision: the people of Moldova were deprived of sovereign rights, of the quality of being the only sovereign in our state,” stated Vladimir Voronin.

The head of the Communist parliamentary group Inna Supac said the government consciously creates a myth of the almighty President and none of the candidates draws the voters’ attention to the fact that the Constitutional Court modified only the method of choosing the Head of State, not yet his powers. The President will be held hostage by the government if he does not enjoy the support of a majority in Parliament.

Communist MP Elena Bodnarenko stated that the Republic of Moldova already has had a ‘puppet President’ during four years and the people should not thus take part in the October 30 elections to choose another ‘puppet President’.

The Communists suggest holding early parliamentary elections by the end of this year so as to restore the composition of Parliament in accordance with the people’s will.
