PCRM indignant at Romania's position in relations with Moldova

The Communists Party (PCRM) expresses its dissatisfaction with the position adopted by Romania in the relations with Moldova, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting a statement issued by the Opposition party on the first day of Romanian President Traian Basescu's visit to Chisinau. According to the statement, during the last few years, especially while Traian Basescu has held office as President of Romania, the quality of the relations between Moldova and Romania has deteriorated. “The Romanian authorities repeatedly made it clear that they do not intend to recognize our people's right to self-determination, considering that Moldova's independence is temporary.” Romania is accused of refusing to sign the Border Treaty and the Basic Treaty with Moldova. “This official stance of the neighboring state is inexplicable from legal, diplomatic and moral viewpoints. It is beyond any interstate cooperation practices used in the EU,” the statement says. The PCRM says that Traian Basescu supported the organizers, initiators and participants in the tragic events that took place in Chisinau after the April 5, 2009 events. It describes those events as a revolution. “After the situation became stable and the legal government brought it under control, the President of Romania accused the administration of those events, describing them as provocation.” The PCRM is also dissatisfied with the Romanian Foreign Minister's position on the Moldovan identity and language made public on January 22. “It is for the first time in the history of the European Union that a EU member state refuses to recognize the neighboring country's right to self-determination and to name its people and language.” The Communists Party expresses its concern about the statements made by the Romanian officials, saying they are not only offensive to the Moldovan people, but also dangerous to the bilateral relations and the regional security. “The PCRM hopes that despite the destructive position of the present administration of Romania, the relations between our countries and peoples will develop amid mutual respect and will become appropriate for two European, contemporary and independent states,” the statement reads.
