“May 9 has a special significance as two holidays are celebrated concomitantly on this day – Victory Day and Europe Day. These days are closely connected,” stated Prime Minister Pavel Filip, who on May 9 laid flowers at the monuments “Eternal Fire”, “Stele of Moldovan Heroes” and “Grieving Mother”,  IPN reports.

The Prime Minister commemorated the heroes killed in World War II at a solemn ceremony held at the Memorial Complex “Eternity”. The event involved President Igor Dodon, MPs, members of the Cabinet, representatives of embassies based in Chisinau, veterans, residents and guests of the capital city.

According to the Government’s press service, Pavel Filip underlined that May 9 combines two holidays that are closely connected between them. “The fight against fascism involved practically the entire united Europe. Later, five years after this victory, Europe recovered and started the political project we see today – a united Europe that lives in welfare. On May 9, we honor the heroes who struggled for peace and think about the European future of our country,” he stated.

He noted the EU is a symbol of peace and freedom and the European integration is the only path to development for the Republic of Moldova. In this connection, Pavel Filip noted a governmental program entitled “Memory. Honor, Respect” was approved at the start of the mandate of the current Government and this was fully implemented.

Pavel Filip, who is the first vice president of the Democratic Party, also took part in the Holiday of Peace and Property for Moldova that was staged by the party in the square of the Metropolitan Cathedral in central Chisinau. This consisted of music and dances, soldiers‘ food, games and parades, surprises for the young and the old.
