The national flag says a lot about who we are as a nation and what values we have. This is the first sign of our sovereignty, Prime Minister Pavel Filip said in the festivity held to celebrate the National Flag Day at the Ministry of Defense, IPN reports.

In the event, the Premier, together with Minister of Defense Anatolie Salaru, hoisted the flag and honored it. Pavel Filip said the national flag reflects the democratic principles, historic traditions and independence of the Republic of Moldova.

“It is known that since March 2, 1992, the state flag has represented the Republic of Moldova on the flagpoles of the head offices of the UN. Now it represents us in the most important international and regional institutions and organizations, including the NATO Partnership for Peace Program. The state flag is raised above all the buildings of the institutions of the central and local public authorities. An increasing number of people hoist the flag on their homes. This fact brings us closer and makes us a united nation that wants to build a prosperous future,” stated Pavel Filip.

He noted that the Moldovan athletes carry with dignity the national flag at the Olympic Games, world and European championships, different international tournaments and competitions. “The national flag is also significant and important in the National Army as it represents unity, faith, devotion and honor for the military. With the tricolor close, they carry out the noble task of protecting the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova. The military service starts and ends in front of the national flag,” said the Premier.

The National Flag Day was instituted by Parliament on April 23, 2010. The tricolor was officially designated as the state flag on April 27, 1990 by the members of the first legislative body.
