Prime Minister Pavel Filip assured the EU Ambassadors for the Eastern Partnership that the Republic of Moldova will continue on the European road and the implementation of the Association Agreement with the EU, even if the presidential elections were won by a pro-Russian candidate. Such statements were made in a meeting with EU Ambassadors for the Eastern Partnership, who came to Moldova on a fact-finding visit, IPN has learned from the Government’s press service.
“The presidential elections cannot change the country’s European integration option. The Republic of Moldova is a parliamentary state. The strategic decisions are taken by Parliament, while their implementation is the Government’s prerogative. There are constitutional guarantees, but also a good post-electoral mood in this regard,” stated Pavel Filip.
He also said that the reforms are imminent for ensuring people’s welfare. “In this Government, you have a guardian of the European road. We set the goal of building a Moldova based on the European values so that each citizen realizes that this is the correct path,” said the Premier.
Pavel Filip also spoke about the program signed with the IMF, which not only offers financing, but is also a reform agenda. “2015 was a year of crisis, 2016 is a year of stabilization, while 2017 will be the year of seriousness for development and accelerated reforms,” he stated.
For their part, the EU Ambassadors for the Eastern Partnership congratulated the Government for the achieved success, including in implementing the priority reform action roadmap and obtaining a program with the IMF, which shows that huge work was done. In another development, the Europeans said the presidential elections were held in accordance with standards and, despite particular shortcomings, represent democratic progress.
The ambassadors also expressed their readiness to consistently support Moldova in doing reforms that will improve people’s lives.
