The criticism and discussions around the Constitutional Court (CC) of the last few weeks derived from the fact that the current constitutional judges were elected by a political vote by the PSRM – ACUM Bloc government coalition in the summer of 2019, the leader of the Democratic Party of Moldova Pavel Filip stated in the talk show “Emphasis on today” on TVR Moldova channel, IPN reports.
“Let’s remember the period of time when the CC judges were voted in. Then the PDM was in the opposition. Personally, I had questions as to the candidates who went to the Court. Regrettably, there were contests that failed and a political vote was ultimately witnessed and you now put me in the situation to comment on disputes between political players who together installed this Court. If the political vote hadn’t been used, the situation at the CC would have been probably different now. They should have followed the competition method only so as to choose the best of those who took part in the contest,” stated Pavel Filip.
Asked about CC president Domnica Manole’s assertions that she possess evidence showing that four constitutional judges were followed and intimidated, Pavel Filip avoided pronouncing, saying the Prosecutor General’s Office should deal with this.
“I know nothing about following and possess no information. I swiftly managed to see what was published on social networking sites, but the competent bodies, the Prosecutor General’s Office should pronounce. If they say they have evidence, it will be easy to clarify things,” stated the Democratic leader PDM.
Asked about the last decisions taken by the CC, Pavel Filip said he has never commented on the Court’s decisions, either he liked them or not.
CC president Domnica Manole stated for the newspaper “Ziarul de Gardă” that some of the constitutional judges informed the Court about alleged actions of intimidation and following. Based on these statements and on press reports about eventual pressure, intimation, illegal following and even threats to the life of the four CC judges, the Court decided to notify the prosecutor general so that the case is being examined.
