Acting president of the Democratic Party of Moldova Pavel Filip, who took over after the former leader Vladimir Plahotniuc tendered his resignation and fled the country, said the critical mass of elements that would enable him to decide whether to apply for the post of president of the PDM or not hasn’t gathered yet. The former Premier noted some of the party members urge him to apply, but he hasn’t yet taken a final decision. He developed the issue in the talk show “Fourth power” on N4 TV channel, IPN reports.
“I must admit that there are persons in local organizations who submitted such a proposal in my meetings with them and in other meetings, not only field ones. But there are also other potential candidates and I thus haven’t yet decided,” stated Pavel Filip.
The ex-Premier said he would like more persons to contend for the presidency of the PDM, but this will probably not be possible. “This was my initial view when I said that we should put off the congress until after the local elections. By then we could work out a new party functioning model. We should have more candidates for the presidency of the PDM who would travel to local organizations and present their views and potential program for the Democratic Party. The one who would gather the largest number of votes and the greatest support among the members of the PDM should become the party’s president,” stated the politician. According to him, this is not possible now, but a president and a new National Political Council of the PDM will be anyway elected on September 7.
Pavel Filip noted he didn’t discuss an eventual candidate for the presidency with former Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu, who is a member of the PDM. “I didn’t discuss the issue with Andrian Candu. I didn’t hear him stating his intention to contend, but besides Andrian Candu, whom I respect a lot as he was a very good Speaker, we also have other members who can cope with the presidency,” he stated.
The extraordinary congress of the PDM set for September 7 is to choose the new leadership of the party.
