Pavel Filip: Authorities will ensure correctness of parliamentary elections

The authorities will make sure that this autumn’s parliamentary elections are held in accordance with the democratic standards and are free and fair, Prime Minister Pavel Filip stated in a meeting with the President of the European Council Donald Tusk held on the sidelines of the meeting of the Moldova – EU – Association Council in Brussels, IPN has learned from the Government’s press service.

Referring to the elections, Pavel Filip said effort will be made to make sure that the standards of the OSCE and the Council of Europe are met. He also referred to the mayoral elections that will be held in Chisinau and Balti on May 20, saying these are an important exercise.

The Premier reaffirmed the importance of the dialogue with the EU, saying the results of the reforms done during the past two years are encouraging for Moldova’s European road. “The authorities are decided to make every effort to show the benefits of the Moldova – EU Association Agreement to the people and to make the European road irreversible,” stated Pavel Filip.

He reiterated the importance of further strengthening the cooperation within the Eastern Partnership as the preconditions of concrete cooperation are very good, while the regional projects will have a direct effect on people’s lives.

For his part, Donald Tusk encouraged the Moldovan authorities to continue doing reforms so as to strengthen the country’s European profile. He welcomed the progress made by the authorities in settling the Transnistrian conflict and reaffirmed the support for the peaceful resolution of the dispute, by observing the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova.
