The memorandum signed between Nuclearelectrica of Romania and Energocom of the Republic of Moldova aims to ensure energy security and consumer protection in the Republic of Moldova, secretary of state of the Ministry of Energy of Romania Pavel-Casian Nițulescu stated in a public debate hosted by IPN News Agency. According to the Romanian official, Nuclearelectrica has considerably expanded its electricity production capacities and Moldova will also benefit from this.

In July 2023, Nuclearelectrica and Moldova’s energy supplier Energocom signed a memorandum to develop long-term cooperation in the energy sector. According to the secretary of state of the Romanian Ministry of Energy, thanks to this memorandum, options for ensuring the supply of energy to Moldova from the future production of Nuclearelectrica will be explored.

“I want to highlight the investments made by Nuclearelectrica. In addition to the two capacities it currently has based on nuclear fuel and the use of Canadian high-safety technology, the investments for the next two units, 3 and 4 at Cernavoda, are to be completed. We hope that these units will be completed between 2030 and 2031. In addition, we have the modular reactors with a capacity of 462 MW. By putting into commercial operation this memorandum of understanding between the Republic of Moldova and Nuclearelectrica, we aim to achieve energy security and consumer protection in the Republic of Moldova. Also, this memorandum will contribute to the development of the skills of human resources of the Republic of Moldova in the field of nuclear energy,” said Pavel-Casian Nițulescu.

Also, the Romanian official noted that the law on offshore wind energy, which was recently promulgated by President Iohannis, offers opportunities for Moldovan companies as well. With the promulgation of this law, Romania entered the straight line towards wind energy production in the Black Sea region.

“President Iohannis promulgated the law to tap offshore wind energy in the Black Sea, a major energy security project for the Balkans. This law demonstrates that we can develop a renewable energy capacity in the Black Sea region, at the first phase of 3 GW, but if we look at the surveys conducted by the World Bank, we can reach up to 76 GW of renewable energy produced in the Black Sea perimeter. Since the promulgation of this law, within three months, the Romanian Ministry of Energy has the task of urgently carrying out a feasibility study to identify the perimeters that will be conceded for the development of these wind farms. Companies from the Republic of Moldova which can participate in the tender procedure regarding the concession of the perimeters and subsequently in the exploitation and construction of these wind farms can also apply to take part in this great project,” said Pavel-Casian Nițulescu.

The public debate entitled “Moldovan-Romanian cooperation in energy sector” was the first installment of the series “Double integration through cooperation and information. Continuity”. The project is implemented by IPN News Agency with the support of the Department for Relations with the Republic of Moldova of the Government of Romania.
