A police inspector from Leova was caught red-handed after a driver denounced him. The policeman asked for 2,000 lei from him for not holding him accountable for driving under the influence, IPN reports.
According to a communiqué of the National Anticorruption Center, the police officer was arrested after he took the money. The 2,000 lei was found in the police car. On him he also had €100 and 2,773 lei in one pocket and 10,000 lei in the other pocket. The origin of the money is yet to be established.
A criminal case was started against the police officer over passive corruption. He was placed under arrest for 72 hours and faces 5 to 10 years in jail and a fine of 6,000 to 8,000 lei. He will also be banned from holding public posts for a period of 7 to 10 years.
