The European Parliament’s resolution that calls on the European Commission to suspend any foreseen payments of macro-financial assistance and budget support to Moldova is a sentence given to the Moldovan government, the leader of the Party “Platform Dignity and Truth” (PPPDA) Andrei Nastase, whose election as mayor of Chisinau wasn’t validated, stated in Strasbourg, IPN reports.
Andrei Nastase said the resolution is not a sentence given to Moldova. On the contrary, Moldova is supported in its aspirations to join the civilized world, the EU, but these aspirations are crushed by the government . The sentence was given because the free elections weren’t validated in Chisinau and the financing was suspended until very strict conditions are met. “We will struggle till the end, until this Plahotniuc-Dodon vote is annulled and the elections in Chisinau are validated. However, what is most important, we will struggle to have a free country whose people want to live decently,” stated the politician.
The leader of the Party “Action and Solidarity” Maia Sandu said the text of the resolution is very harsh in relation to the Moldovan authorities. The document says it clearly that the decision to invalidate the elections is contrary to the democratic principles. The MEPs reminded that the Moldovan authorities ignored the Venice Commission’s recommendations about the mixed electoral system that was introduced last year, expressing their concerns and showing their solidarity with the Moldovans citizens whose vote was stolen. “Today the European Parliament said it clearly that the preconditions for receiving macro-financial assistance, especially the political conditions concerning the multiparty system, weren’t met and that the authorities recovered no money of the stolen funds,” noted Maia Sandu.
For his part, the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party Viorel Ciubotaru said the adopted resolution represents a victory scored because they managed to convey the message of the people protesting in the streets in Chisinau, who also adopted a resolution with concrete demands for the current government. The EP’s resolution contains a very powerful message of support for the Moldovan citizens who have now to struggle for their basic rights.
At the suggestion of the Group of the European People’s Party, the European Parliament, with 345 votes in favor, 160 abstentions and 35 votes against, adopted a resolution by which it recommends the European Commission to suspend any foreseen payments of macro-financial assistance and budget support to Moldova. The MEPs consider any decision on the future payments should be taken only after the planned parliamentary elections and on condition that these are held in accordance with the internationally recognized standards and are assessed by specialized intentional organizations.
