The Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) will challenge in the Constitutional Court the amendments to the Election Code that will run counter to the standards of the Venice Commission, PAS MP Sergiu Litvinenco announced in a public debate titled “Amendments to the Election Code: advantages and risks to democracy”, which was organized by IPN News Agency.

“We will analyze once again the extent to which some of the new rules favor a particular electoral competitor. We want a free and fair electoral process, an electoral process where the two election runners competing in the runoffs and all those who will want to take part would enjoy equal conditions and we would not witness situations when someone benefits from unfair advantages,” stated Sergiu Litvinenco.

He noted the amendments to the legislation should not only be adopted, but should also be implemented. The unimplemented laws are useless.

“Only when we have free and fair elections, we will be able to say that things go as they should. Until then, it is important to enforce the law. One can ban anything by law, including the electoral corruption and presents, those foundations, but, as long as the laws are not applied, things will not change,” concluded Sergiu Litvinenco.

The debate “Amendments to the Election Code: advantages and risks to democracy” was the 144th installment of the series “Developing political culture through public debates” that is supported by the Hanns Seidel Foundation.
