In districts, various coalitions were formed because, at the local level, the people know each other and local interests prevail. This is how MPs of the Party of Action and Solidarity and of the Party of Socialists commented on the alliances formed between the two parties at local level. According to representatives of the two political entities, if coalitions are created at the local level, this is not treason, but responsibility before the voters, IPN reports.

According to the leader of the Social Democratic Party of Moldova Iurie Ciocan, alliances were formed exclusively between PAS and PSRM in eight district councils, namely Anenii Noi, Cahul, Drochia, Dubasari, Singerei, Soroca, Soldanesti and Stefan Voda. Socialist heavyweight Grigore Novac admits that alliances at the local level are variegated, but the PAS-PSRM coalitions do not imply tacit agreements at the national level.

“In Telenesti, the Revival Party supported PAS. In Orhei, it was a kind of wedding. In some districts, it is not possible otherwise mathematically. There, the councils are dissolved and the elections are rerun or a coalition is formed. There are coalitions with PAS, with Chicu, in Floresti even with Nichiforciuc. A nationwide analysis will show that the coalitions are very different because otherwise it is not possible,” the deputy head of the Bloc of Communists and Socialists Grigore Novac stated in the program “At 360 Degrees” on Radio Moldova.

PAS MP Oazu Nantoi said that alliances at the local level were formed to meet the interests of citizens in districts, without taking into account the doctrine of each party.

“At the local level, people know each other and these coalitions that are being created are based on local interests. At the local level, they do not join the North Atlantic Alliance. At the local level, they do not declare war on Russia. There, people solve local problems and these coalitions are necessary for the local power to be functional and responsible. We, as a society, like to create enemies where there are no enemies. At the local level, it’s not about betrayals. It’s about accountability to local voters,” said PAS MP Oazu Nantoi.

Following the general local elections held in November 2023, the Party of Action and Solidarity won 357 seats of district and municipal councilors, while the Party of Socialists – 256 seats. PAS also holds a majority of seats in four district councils, namely Calarasi, Criuleni, Ialoveni and Straseni, while the PSRM – in three district councils, specifically Briceni, Donduseni and Ocnita.
