If parliamentary elections were held next Sunday, 38.3% of the electors would vote for the Party of Action and Solidary (PAS), 24.6% for the Electoral Bloc of the Communists and the Socialists (EBCS), 3.9% for the Shor Party, while 3.8% for the Bloc “Renato Usatîi”. 14.3% of those surveyed would go to the polls, but don’t know who to vote for yet. 6.3% didn’t want to answer, while 3.6% said they would not vote, shows a sociological survey conducted by “WatchDog” Community in partnership with CBS-AXA Center of Sociological Investigations and the Institute for Public Policy.

In a news conference at IPN, “WatchDog” head Valeriu Pașa said that if only the decided voters are taken into account, 50.5% of these would vote for the PAS, 32.5% for the EBCS, 5.2% for the Shor Party and 5% for the Bloc “Renato Usatîi”.

Asked what political personality they trust the most, with the question being an open one, 33.9% of those interviewed mentioned Maia Sandu, 14.5% – Igor Dodon, 3.3% - Vladimir Voronin, 1.4% - Ilan Shor. 35.8% of those polled do not trust anyone. According to Valeriu Pașa, the figure of those who do not trust anyone seems high, but the previous years it exceeded 50%. This way trust in the political class was restored somehow.

Asked about the state of affairs in the country, 64.7% of those sampled said things in the country go wrong. Valeriu Pașa said the figures form part of an opinion poll showing only some trends in society, exactly for the period during which it was conducted, and this should treated as such without trenchant forecasts of the election outcome based on it.

Asked what aspects of contenders’ electoral programs are more important for them, most of the respondents mentioned the intensification of the fight against corruption, followed by the combating of poverty, reduction of migration and encouragement of the return of the Moldovans who are outside the country.

If they had to choose between entry into the European Union and entry into the Eurasian Union, 60.2% of those surveyed would pick the first while 25.7% – the second. Asked what country offered the greatest assistance to the Republic of Moldova during the pandemic, most of the respondents mentioned the EU, Romania and Russia.

According to Vasile Cantarji, CBS-AXA vice director, the nationwide poll was carried out by phone and covered a sample of 1,154 Moldovans, except for those who live on the left side of the Nistru. The data were collected during June 2-8. The margin of sampling error is +/- 2.9%.

IPP director Arcadie Barbăroșie said that as the survey was conducted by phone, there is an error that cannot be yet determined precisely, but this derives from the methodology of the poll. The Institute for Public Policy will also produce the Public Opinion Poll that will be published in the future.

The poll forms part of a project that is funded by the European Endowment for Democracy.
