If parliamentary elections were held next Sunday, the political forces from the current Parliament would gain most of the votes and would enter the next legislative body. The data of the last opinion poll carried out by de CBS-Research, the Institute for Development and Social Initiatives “IDIS” and the Institute of Political Science and International Relations of the Romanian Academy (IPRI) show the ruling party PAS loses ground to the opposition forces. PAS and BECS have almost the same number of supporters. The study authors said the tendency is predictable as the people’s confidence in the government constantly erodes away, IPN reports.

Citizens’ voting options changed during five months of the last parliamentary elections. This way, if parliamentary elections were held next Sunday, PAS and BECS would win an equal number of seats. By 24.7% of those polled would vote for PAS and BECS, while 8.2% for Șor Party.

BECS (PCRM-PSRM Bloc) – 24.7%

PAS – 24.7%

Șor Party – 8.2 %
(…)
No party/I would not vote in elections – 11.6%
No answer – 4.2%
I don’t know – 18.8%

Of those who are decided, 37.8% would vote for BECS, while 37.7% for PAS.

“The voting option for the ruling party diminished. This is inevitable. Any government pays for its failures sooner or later. We know all the major events that took place and, given the exaggerated expectations of voters, the tendencies are normal,” said the director of CBS Research Vasile Cantarji.

The survey shows President Maia Sandu remains the most trusted politician. When the respondents were not offered alternatives and were asked to name the politician they trust the most, the President was mentioned by 17% of those polled. The president of honor of PSRM Igor Dodon is trusted by 9% of those surveyed, while the mayor general of Chisinau Igor Ceban by slightly over 3% of those interviewed.

Maia Sandu – 17.0%

Igor Dodon – 9.0%

Ion Ceban – 3.3%

Vladimir Voronin – 2.7%

“The Gorbachev syndrome is the greatest danger for the current government. The Gorbachev syndrome is when a leader is much more cherished, applauded and supported outside the country than inside it. It is a paradox here. The attempts to offset the lack of popularity by visits abroad and by applause obtained outside can have the opposite effect. The people will not believe you and will show their distrust, including in those who applaud you. The moods of the population of the Republic of Moldova are somewhere there. The people are distrustful, disappointed,” said IPRI director Dan Dungaciu.

The poll was conducted on December 4-15 and covered a sample of 1,055 persons. The margin of sampling error is plus/minus 2.8%. The survey results were made known in several days after the presentation of a poll carried out by the International Republican Institute (IRI) during September –October 2021. According to the IRI poll, PAS is supported by 36% of those surveyed, PSRM by 14%, while PCRM by 5%.
