Thousands of persons came together in the central square of Chisinau on July 5 to take part in an event called the Great National Assembly, where they voted for the Union with Romania. According to the organizers – the associations that form part of the National Unity Bloc – the event involved about 30,000 people. After the event, a part of the participants went on the March of Stephan the Great towards Bucharest, IPN reports.

The unionists voted a document by which they declared that the realization of the right to national unity of the Romanians from both banks of the Prut River is a desideratum that cannot be postponed. The national division witnessed over the last few decades can lead only to the dissipation of money and spiritual energies, causing considerable suffering to the people. A bright future for the people from both banks of the Prut can be built only together, says the document.

The participants in the Great National Assembly called on all the decision makers of Romania and Moldova to leave the ideologies and party interests aside and promote national solidarity and to contribute to the unification of the two banks. The Governments and Parliaments of the two states are asked to immediately set up working groups to work out economic, legislative and political documents to lay the basis of the Union.

During the next few days, the unionists will walk along the Straseni-Lozova-Calarasi-Cornesti-Ungheni route. On July 11, they will cross the Prut by a flower bridge to show their national sentiments. The organizers said it is for the first time in the last few years that the events in favor of the Union enjoy such massive popular support.
