Deputy Speaker Liliana Palihovici discussed the Parliament’s priorities regarding the observance of human rights in Moldova with the UN Assistant Secretary General Ivan Šimonović in a meeting in Chisinau, IPN reports.

Liliana Palihovici welcomed the presence of the first UN Assistant Secretary Genera for human rights in Moldova. “This visit is very important for our country and is relevant because it forms part of the reforms initiated at national level in the area of human rights,” she stated.

The Deputy Speaker expressed her confidence that the visit will contribute to strengthening the dialogue between the authorities and the special mechanisms of the United Nations Human Rights Council. “We are glad that the UN officials are in Chisinau now that the authorities are involved in a broad process of consultations with the external partners and civil society over the human rights, within the Universal Periodic Review,” said Liliana Palihovici.

The officials also discussed the observance of human rights in Moldova’s Transnistrian region from the angle of the conclusions and recommendations contained in the report compiled by the UN Senior Expert Thomas Hammarberg. The Deputy Speaker said it is important to swiftly adopt the national mechanisms for preventing and remedying the human rights situation in Transnistria.

Liliana Palihovici also voiced hope that the authorities will manage to implement the recommendations formulated in this report, in accordance with the human rights action plan for 2016, and to liquidate the existing shortcomings.
