The parties have differing opinions about the mixed-member electoral system. Representatives of the ruling parties consider this system enables the citizens to choose by themselves the MPs, while representatives of the opposition parties said the mixed system fuels autocracy. The opinions were stated in the program “Fabrika” on Publika TV channel, IPN reports.

Democratic MP Sergiu Sirbu noted that the mixed electoral system offers the citizens increased sovereignty as these will be able to choose by themselves the MPs and will not depend on the decision of party leaders. As to the delegation of the Venice Commission and OSCE/ODIHR, which is in Moldova on a fact-finding visit, the MP said the members of the delegation came to assess the technical procedures of the new electoral system, not to pronounce on the mixed electoral system in general. “They could formulate particular recommendations for improving the technical procedures, but would no longer pronounce on the opportunity. Even if there could be references to the decision of last June, the electoral system change was already implemented,” he stated.

Eugen Carpov, deputy chairman of the European People’s Party of Moldova, said it is now important for the Republic of Moldova to have independent and powerful institutions that would ensure the observance of the rights of all the participants in the electoral process, in accordance with the law.

Socialist MP Vasile Bolea, within a call-in in the same program, said the Socialists are dissatisfied with the fact that not enough single-member constituencies were created for the Transnistrian region and the diaspora. “For the first time, our citizens from Transnistria will have their own representatives in Parliament, where their voice will be heard. The diaspora and the national minorities will also have their own representatives in Parliament. That’s why I consider the citizens in general will see the benefits of this system,” he stated, adding that in the future this electoral system should be improved.

Deputy chairman of the Liberal Party Valeriu Munteanu said the mixed-member electoral system fuels autocracy and this is a problem. For the Democratic Party and the Party of Socialists to ensure a greater presence in the future Parliament and be sure that they will be able to govern, they agreed to allow a number of half-open doors to be closed before Moldova.
