A parliamentary commission was set up to assess the integrated water resources management in relation to the Nistru River. A draft decision to this effect proposed by the Socialist MPs was adopted by Parliament on February 12, IPN reports.
The commission consists of Socialist MPs Radu Mudreac and Alla Pilipetskaya, with the latter being the commission’s head. For Moldova MP Violeta Ivanov was named deputy head of the commission, while PAS MP Vladimir Bolea will serve as secretary. Among its members are also Iurie Reniță of the PPPDA, Nicolae Ciubuc of the PDM, Marina Tauber of the Shor Party, and Gennady Verdeș of Pro Moldova.
In the same sitting, the MPs adopted a statement on the current and future impact of the hydropower constructions on the Nistru and the prevention of an imminent ecological catastrophe. The statement was drafted by the members of the platform For Moldova. They said that these constructions can increase seismic activity in the region and the risk of erosion and landslides, can worsen the quality of water and disrupt the functioning of the ecosystem of the Medium and Lower Nistru and of the delta and, consequently, can have a negative impact on the Back Sea ecosystem and can create significant difficulties in the supply of Moldova with water.
“Parliament is deeply concerned about Kiev’s intention to install and put into operation new turbines and to extend the Novodnestrovsk Hydroelectric Plant and build a cascade of six hydropower stations on the Nistru, which would be catastrophic for the Republic of Moldova”, runs the statement.
