Parliament will issue a statement on Kosovo events

The Parliament on February 21 set up a working group that will formulate a statement on the situation created in Kosovo, Info-Prim Neo reports. The proposal was put up by MP Vlad Filat at the plenary meeting of the Parliament. He reminded of the Government’s declaration, but said that Moldova is a parliamentary country and the legislature should express its own position. A number of MPs supported the proposal. The leader of the Democratic Party Dumitru Diacov said that he raised the given issue at the meeting of the Commission for Foreign Policy and European Integration. Moldova should react calmly, but in a principled manner, especially as the Government and the political parties stated that there are no similarities between Kosovo and Moldova, Diacov said. Kosovo’s parliament unanimously endorsed a declaration of independence from Serbia, in a historic session on February 17. Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci promised a democracy that respected the rights of all ethnic communities. Kosovo’s independence is backed by the United States and a part of the Europeans states. Russia and other EU member states, including Spain and Romania, said they would not recognise Kosovo. The Government of Moldova stated that the possible recognition of Kosovo by a number of UN member states arouses concern in Moldova. Though the Kosovo problem is unique by content, such a settlement formula represents not only a violation of Serbia’s territorial integrity, but also a serious factor that destabilises the situation in Europe, a dangerous stimulant to separatist activity in all the conflict zones, the Moldovan Government considers.
