The presidential elections will take place on November 1. The draft decision concerning the date of the presidential elections was adopted by Parliament on May 21. The opposition MPs said President Igor Dodon should tender his resignation and the presidential elections should be held before time, IPN reports.
The term in office of incumbent President Igor Dodon expires on December 23, 2020. Under the Election Code, the presidential elections are held at least 30 days and at most 60 days before the expiration of the incumbent President’s term in office. Parliament agrees the date of presidential elections at least 60 days before the election day.
In her speech, Shor Party MP Marina Tauber criticized President Igor Dodon, saying he became a big disappointment for those who put their hope in him. The Head of State transformed his political career into an own business and a method of enriching himself. “We are for Igor Dodon’s resignation and for holding snap presidential elections,” stated Marina Tauber.
MP of the PAS group of the ACUM Bloc Lilian Carp said Igor Dodon should tender his resignation, while the snap presidential elections should be held in summer. A number of criminal cases were brought back into focus, including the one concerning the bank fraud, in order to use them as political blackmail. Igor Dodon committed illegalities together with Vlad Plahotniuc. He should resign also because of the isolation foreign policy that he promoted.
MP of the PPPDA group of the ACUM Bloc Iurie Reniță said the presidential elections should take place earlier following the incumbent President’s resignation and not of honor as this person does not have honor.
Socialist MP Vlad Batrîncea said Igor Dodon was voted by a large number of citizens and the disrespectful statements about him show lack of respect for the people too. The MPs who gave speeches are themselves involved in illegalities and are featured in investigations. These MPs (Marina Tauber and Iurie Reniță e.n.) also have ties with Vlad Plahotniuc, who is trying to destabilize the situation in the country.
Democratic MP Dumitru Diacov noted that a technical decision is voted to set the date of the presidential elections and it is the people who decide as they elect the President and Parliament once in four years.
The decision was ultimately adopted by a majority of votes.
