The Parliament of Romania is ready to continue to support Moldova’s reform agenda on the path of European integration, officials of the Romanian legislature said in a meeting with Speaker Andrian Candu. In the discussions with the President of the Senate of Romania Calin Popescu-Tariceanu and Chairman of the Chamber of Deputies Valeriu Stefan Zgonea, Adrian Candu discussed the priorities of the Moldovan authorities in the reformation process, IPN reports.
According to the press office of the Parliament of Moldova, the Romanian officials reiterated their support for the implementation of the Association Agreement and the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement with the EU. The sides agreed to institute a permanent format of punctual dialogue and cooperation at the level of standing commissions in this regard.
The interlocutors discussed the progress made by Moldova in implementing the Association Agreement with the EU, the cooperation with the International Monetary Fund, the sociopolitical situation in the country and the regional context.
Andrian Candu spoke about the legislature’s priorities during the current session, which include the strengthening of the financial-banking system, advancing of the justice sector reform and the fight against corruption, adoption of the package of laws on integrity, and attraction of foreign investment to the national energy system. He reiterated the importance of resuming the cooperation with the IMF and thanked Romania for the constant support provided to Moldova, including for the recent humanitarian aid to the value of €3.6m.
“Regardless of its internal agenda, the Republic of Moldova was and remains in the list of priorities of Romania, which helped our country when we needed support the most. A number of concrete projects with real benefits for the people have been implemented. This motivates us to step up the pace,” stated the Speaker.
The discussions also centered on the progress made in the Transnistrian conflict settlement talks in the 5+2 format and the cooperation with the authorities of Gagauzia.
Moldova’s Speaker of Parliament Andrian Candu is paying working visits to Bucharest and Brussels during June 13-16. In Bucharest, he will also have meetings with the President of Romania Klaus Iohannis and Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos.
