Maia Banarescu was appointed by Parliament as people’s ombudswoman for child rights. She is one of the two candidates selected by the special parliamentary commission, IPN reports.

Liberal MP Ion Casian, who heads the special commission, said the contest involved five candidates, but only two of them were chosen as appropriate – Maia Banarescu and Tatiana Cristenco. The commission proposed both of them for the post, arguing these have the necessary qualification and enough experience in the field.

Most of the MPs voted for Maia Banarescu. The Communist MPs didn’t take part in the vote in protest at the fact that the previous decision to name Ecaterin Burlacu as people’s ombudswoman for child rights was declared unconstitutional.
