President Nicolae Timofti said Parliament will possibly vote again on the legislation banning the use of the Communist symbols. In an interview for Radio Moldova, the head of state said he would back such an initiative, IPN reports.

The Communist symbols were banned by Parliament in 2012. But afterward the law was declared unconstitutional and the head of state considers this a personal failure of his.

“I understood there are possibilities for the legislative body to return to this law and to adopt it in another form so that it is constitutional,” said Nicolae Timofti.

Before pronouncing on the constitutionality of the relevant bill, the Constitutional Court asked for the opinion of the Venice Commission, which said that the banning of the Communist symbols – the hammer and sickle – runs counter to the European Convention on Human Rights.
