During the 25 years of the declaration of independence, the Republic of Moldova dealt with many challenges. The country can become a success story of the new EU enlargement wave. Such statements were made in a festive meeting at the Palace of the Republic, where Parliament celebrated the 25th anniversary of the declaration of independence together with representatives of the development partners and the diplomatic corps working in Chisinau, IPN reports.

In the opening of the event, Speaker of Parliament Andrian Candu said this is one of the activities devoted to the 25th anniversary that was marked on August 27. The 25 years haven’t always been as the people wanted, but there is a country project now, called the European integration.

According to the Speaker, the Republic of Moldova has to cope with many challenges yet, but enjoys also a lot of opportunities. In the autumn session, the legislative body aims to ensure the reforms are really implemented and will lay greater emphasis on parliamentary control.

MEP Andi Cristea, co-chairman of the Moldova - EU Parliamentary Association Committee, said the Republic of Moldova is the only country in the Eastern vicinity of the EU that signed the Association Agreement with the EU and also benefits from a visa-free regime. “The progress and authenticity of the pro-European commitment are clearly seen both in Brussels and in other capitals of the European Union. Things are not perfect and I assert with realism that they cannot be perfect in a young democracy that is strengthening itself. Political will and the continuity of the process are essential. The Republic of Moldova can become the success story of a new European integration wave,” stated the MEP.

The President of the National Council of the Federal Assembly of Switzerland Christa Markwalder noted that on its 25th anniversary, the Republic of Moldova is a very young democracy and the country will yet face many obstacles, but achieved also many results.

The Constitutional Court’s President Alexandru Tanase said that after 25 years of independence, there is no place for triumphalism and everyone bears a part of the blame for this. Only the implementation of political systems appropriate to time will enable to discuss this country’s future. A number of foreign experts criticized the electoral system of Moldova, saying it is unsuitable for this country and encouraged learning from the experience of the Baltic States in the field.

The ceremonies staged by Parliament on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the declaration of Moldova’s independence involved Speakers, Deputy Speakers and MPs from 11 countries, namely Ukraine, Belgium, Poland, Switzerland, Romania, Bulgaria, Latvia, Lithuania, Serbia, Turkey, and Albania, as well as Prince Radu of Romania.
