The MPs will initiate the amendment of the Constitution with a view to excluding the parliamentary immunity. After the meeting of the Standing Bureau, Speaker of Parliament Andrian Candu said the necessary signatures are now being collected. At least 34 signatures are needed for submitting a bill to amend the supreme law, IPN reports.

According to the official, despite the Central Election Commission’s decision to reject the initiative to hold a constitutional referendum, they will consider one of the subjects that were to be proposed in the plebiscite. “Given the people’s signatures in favor of the removal of immunity, today we started to collect signatures for a bill to amend the Constitution and exclude the parliamentary immunity,” stated Andrian Candu.

After the necessary signatures are collected, the bill will be transmitted to the Constitutional Court for appraisal.

An initiative group created by the Civic Platform “Dignity and Truth” during several months collected over 400,000 signatures in favor of holding a constitutional referendum on the election and dismissal of the head of state by the people, the reduction in the number of MPs and the limitation of the parliamentary immunity. The Central Election Commission invalidated the collected signatures for the reason that the law providing that by at least 20,000 signatures must be collected from half of the country’s districts and municipalities wasn’t obeyed.
