On the birthday of the late poet Dumitru Matcovschi, who would have turned 85 on October 20 this year, the Parliament is hosting the exhibition "Dumitru Matcovschi, the Symbolic Poet of Bessarabia." The exhibition, organized in collaboration with the National Library and the National Archives Agency, is open to the public for free at the Legislative Museum until the end of November, reports IPN.
The event showcases volumes of poetry, prose, drama, and various translations of Matcovschi's works. Visitors can also view photographs capturing key moments in the poet's life, provided by the National Archives. A highlight of the exhibition is his debut poetry collection, Maci în rouă (Poppies in Dew), published in 1963.
Dumitru Matcovschi was a prolific writer, authoring over 50 books, and is regarded as a symbol of Bessarabian culture and identity. He was honored with the "Order of the Republic" and the "Star of Romania" order.
In addition to his literary achievements, Matcovschi served as a deputy in Moldova's first Parliament, elected in 1990. During his time in office, he contributed to the adoption of crucial legislation, including Moldova’s declaration of independence from the Soviet Union on August 27, 1991, and the establishment of Romanian as the official language. Through his political work, Matcovschi consistently championed national values, promoting the Romanian language, culture, and identity in Moldova.
