The profaning and vandalizing of graves and monuments will be penalized harsher, including with jail. Harsher penalties will also be imposed for profaning of places venerated by persons of different religions or for attacking persons in religious places and near them. This is provided in a bill to amend the Contravention Code and the Penal Code that was given two readings by Parliament, IPN reports.

Radu Foltea, secretary of state at the Ministry of Justice, said the bill is an additional manifestation of Moldova’s and authorities’ intention to counteract any form of religious intolerance on its territory.

The profaning of monuments will be punished with a fine of at most 47,500 lei and 180 to 240 hours of community service or at most two years behind bars.

Also, the Contravention Code will regulate the profaning of monuments as a contravention punished with a fine of at most 1,800 lei.

The new provisions will take effect when they are published in the Official Gazette.
