The agreements on the creation and work of the interstate television and radio company MIR were denounced. Parliament gave a final reading to the bill providing for this, adopting it, IPN reports.

Under the bill, the goal is to protect the national audiovisual space and to ensure information security, taking into account the current regional situation and the threats to national security due to Russia’s
aggression against Ukraine.

According to representatives of the Government, 40.3 million lei dues were paid from the state budget to the
MIR representative office in Moldova in 2000-2022.

The authorities noted that the denouncing of the agreements will help save money. Also, Moldova will reaffirm its commitment to protect the national and regional information space.

MIR is a multinational public television broadcaster that features programming from all the countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States and that founded the TV channels “Mir TV” and “Mir 24”. It does not possess a broadcast license issued by the Audiovisual Council and is therefore not a media services broadcaster within Moldova’s jurisdiction. Moreover, the retransmission of these TV channels was stopped for the period of the state of emergency based on an order made by the Commission for Exceptional Situations.

The agreement on the creation of the interstate television and radio company MIR was signed in Bishkek in 1992, while the agreement on the international law guarantees for the free and independent work of MIR was signed in Ashgabat in 1993.
