The Palace of the Republic will house the legislature’s sittings in 2011 as well as the repair works in the Parliament Building go on. Contacted by Info-Prim Neo, vice director of the Beneficiary Assistance at Social Facilities Service Anatol Cerba said that if the budget for 2011 provides for sufficient amounts for the repair, the works may be completed by the end of this year. A sum of 130 million lei is needed for the purpose.
Works to the value of 79 million lei have been performed since the Parliament Building started to be reconstructed. The floor was renovated. There were set up the telecommunications, water, sewerage, power, ventilation and anti-fire systems. Works are now carried out to supply the building with electricity according to a new scheme. Anatol Cerba said the annex built behind the Parliament Building allowed enlarging the assembly hall. The exterior of the building will not be essentially modified.
The reconstruction of the building is coordinated by the main contractor - SRL Consfirm Grup, which was founded by former Minister of Construction and Territory Development Vladimir Baldovici. Seven more construction companies execute specialized works.
The Parliament Building and the Presidential Office were devastated on April 7, when the peaceful protests degenerated into riots. Before starting the repair works, ex-Minister Vladimir Baldovici said 250 million lei will be needed to renovate the Parliament Building and 260 million lei to repair the Presidential Office. The works were to be finished in eight and five months respectively, before the start of 2010.
