The Chisinau-based high schools “Mihai Eminescu”, “Mircea Eliade”, “Gheorghe Asachi”, “Ion Creanga” and “Spiru Haret” are the most popular with the parents who have children aged six and seven. “Prometeu” remains the most popular among the private high schools, Tatiana Nagnibeda-Tverdohleb, the head of the Chisinau General Division of Education, Youth and Sport, stated for Info-Prim Neo. The children are admitted to the first grade according to the “first come, first served” principle. When the places in the schools are filled, the parents are suggested an institution located closer to their home or at least in the same district. The applicants for specialized classes must take tests. About 6,000 children have been accepted into the first grade so far, by approximately 100 fewer compared with the same period last year. The deadline for applications is September 5. The kindergartens accept children throughout the year. According to Tatiana Nagnibeda-Tverdohleb, there are 150 state-run and 17 private schools and high schools in the municipality of Chisinau. The largest high schools are “Mihai Berezovskii” and “Gheorghe Asachi”, with over 2,000 students. The number of students at the other institutions is around 1,500.
