Residents of Donici village of Orhei district staged a protest in front of the Government Building on January 10. They demanded that the authorities should abrogate the district council’s decision to close the local school on January 1, within the education reform, IPN reports.
Ecaterina Siracov, the grandmother of two children, said the district authorities decided to close the school in Donici, while the students were transferred to the school in Camencea, which is situated 3 km away. The distance is not long, but the road is difficult and with dangerous intersections. In winter it is often blocked by snowdrifts. The learning conditions at the school in Camencea are inappropriate. The walls are covered in mold because the roof hasn’t been repaired for a long time and there are sources of transmitted diseases.
Parent Eudochia Jalba said that she was phoned and threatened with dismissal if she went to the protest. “Individuals travel through the village and inquire where particular people live, how many children they have and where they work. We are being threatened,” she stated.
Tatiana Vasilachi, the mother of three children, one of whom is in wheelchair, said that she bought a house near the school so that she could take the child in wheelchair to classes. The bus that will take the children from Donici to Camencea hasn’t been adjusted for persons with special needs.
Another parent said the school in Camencea also experiences a shortage of teachers. “They also do not have teachers of French, Russia, physical education and geography, as at our school. The conditions are the same. We do not understand why the authorities took such a decision,” stated Eugenia Caruntu.
On January 1, five schools in Sirota, Sarcani, Pohorniceni, Hulboaca and Donici villages of Orhei district were reorganized by the district authorities.
