Tens of children suffer injuries as a result of the irresponsibility of parents who leave hazardous things within the children’s reach. The accidents can be anticipated and prevented, said Ala Condrea, the head of the Emergency Hospitalization Division of the Balti Municipal Hospital. When the parents realize the dangers and appropriately supervise the children, there won’t be so many burned and poisoned children and even death cases.
Contacted by Info-Prim Neo, Ala Condrea said that about 200 children aged between 0 and 16 were admitted to the Balti Municipal Hospital in September with fractures, poisoning and burns. “We every time make recommendations, but aren’t heard. It happens that the same child is taken to the hospital with different injuries for several times. The parents’ irresponsibility leads to the injuring of children,” said the doctor.
One of the recent cases that became known happened in Falesti. A four-year-old child was taken to the hospital in a coma after his parents gave him non-prescribed drugs for fever for five days. “It was too late. We could not save him,” said Ala Condrea. According to the doctor, the child died because he received preparations that are not recommended for children.
The same month, two children of 13 from the same grade were taken to the hospital in a serious condition after they swallowed the grandmother’s pills. The girls knew that the pills made the sleep deeper and took by 10 pills each in order not to go to school. The doctors managed to save them.
A girl aged 4 from Drochia was hospitalized after she cut one toe with the spade. Another child from Balti municipality got poisoned with deadly nightshade. “The parents knew that this poisonous plant grew in the orchard, but did nothing to remove this danger and the child got poisoned,” said the doctor.
The removal of dangers is the main method by which the parents can protect the children from accidents. “The small children must be permanently under supervision and should not be left in the care of older children or foreign persons. The parents should be familiarized with the possible dangers and prevention methods. The parents who do not look after the children should be punished. Every parent is obliged to know the signs of danger, not to treat the child as an object and not to resort to the treatment of an illness without consulting a doctor,” said Ala Condrea.
The Ministry of Health data show that over 2,000 children younger than 5 needed emergency medical assistance after receiving traumas in 2011. At least six children become victims of accidents every day.
