Family doctors and medical workers from Comrat go from door to door to sensitize the parents to the danger of children younger than 5 being injured in accidents at home. The actions form part of the campaign “A danger-free home for your child!”.
Maria Gherciu, specialist in mother and child medical assistance at the Comrat Family Doctors Center, has told Info-Prim Neo that the medical workers formulate recommendations for preventing poisonings, burns, scalds, and suffocations, these being the most often domestic accidents involving children. In Comrat, there are 3,400 families with children younger than five.
According to Maria Gherciu, such campaigns are welcome as many children suffer positionings and different traumas because the parents are not attentive or do not know about dangers that can be avoided.
Ivana Piron, medical assistant at the Comrat Family Doctors Center, said the parents admit that they sometimes leave dangerous objects within the children’s reach. “We explain to them that there are risks and the tragedies can be avoided. The effects are visible. The parents obey the recommendations in order not to expose their children to perils,” she stated.
The communication campaign “A danger-free home for your child!” is carried out within the Moldovan-Swiss REPEMOL project “Regionalization of Emergency and Intensive Care Pediatric Services in Moldova”, in partnership with the Ministry of Health and the Center for Health Policies and Services. A national study conduced by REPEMOL in 2011 shows that 75.5% of the persons looking after children younger than five know about the risks of the children being injured at home. Only 9.4% of those questioned could yet say at least one source of danger to the children’s health.
