The unionist parties didn’t enter the new Parliament elected in February because there was no unity between them and because a resetting of parties on the political arena is now taking place in Moldova. The leaders of the Democratic Acton Party (PAD), the National Unity Party (PUN) and the Liberal Reformist Party (PLR) developed the issue in the talk show “Red button” on Moldova 1 channel, IPN reports.

PAD president Mihai Godea said the unionists could have entered Parliament only by common political and electoral actions. The lack of a powerful unionist current that would represent the unionist citizens conditioned a low voter turnout at the February elections. “This was a consequence of the things that occurred long before the campaign as many political players constantly attacked the unionists and the unionist parties during a long period of time,”. Mihai Godea noted the PAD is ready to unconditionally consolidate the unionist political current. According to him, a discussion on the unionist subject is witnessed again after the February elections and a consensus between the parties that share the union desideratum could be reached until the local elections.

Ion Kobyshenko, of the PUN, said the elections held this February weren’t about the union. After the people became disappointed in the Liberal Party, it is hard for a newly created party to cover a large part of the unionist voters during a short period of time. “The PUN continues to strengthen its bodies. We are preparing for the local elections and we can already speak about another political stage in the Republic of Moldova,” stated Ion Kobyshenko. According to him, the political class underwent particular changes and at the local elections the voters will penalize the parties that entered Parliament.

PLR vice president Tatiana Potâng said the unionist parties didn’t enter Parliament for a number of reasons, also because a period of resetting of political forces is now taking place. Namely the unionist current was most seriously affected by this phenomenon. The performance of the Liberal Party, which was considered the voice of the unionists, also led to the decline in the trust in and value of unionists. “This should make us think so that we mobilize and adjust,” she stated.

Editorialist Nicolae Negru noted the situation related to unionism is rather uncertain. There is no leader who would concentrate this current around him/her. Polls show the number of unionists decreased, but the number of parties that share this desideratum multiplied. The leaders and the teams are two problems of this segment. Not much time remained until the local elections for the unionist parties to unite and achieve success.
