The motor vehicle owners who will refuse to tell the police who drove their vehicles when traffic violations were committed will be further penalized. The Constitutional Court on November 18 ruled that the relevant provisions of the Code of Administrative Offenses do not run counter to the norms of the basic law, IPN reports.
MP Simion Furdui asked the Court to pronounce on the constitutionality of Article 234 of the Code of Administrative Offenses, which stipulates fines of 900 to 2,000 lei for not telling to whom the vehicle was entrusted in a certain period of time at the request of the police.
According to the lawmaker, this article is incompatible with Article 26 of the Constitution, which guarantees the right to defense that implies the person’s freedom not to testify against him or his close relatives.
The Constitutional Court rejected the arguments invoked by the MP.
